Crafting Self-Reliance: How eSARAS is Revolutionizing India’s Rural Economy

Driven by the Digital India vision and DAY-NRLM, the eSARAS marketplace bridges grassroots artisans with mainstream commerce, turning rural craft into scalable women-led enterprise.

Over the past decade, the Digital India initiative has redefined public service delivery, extending far beyond urban centers into the heart of rural communities. Technology has evolved from a administrative facility into a tool for grassroots economic empowerment. At the forefront of this shift is eSARAS (SARAS Aajeevika), an online e-commerce ecosystem developed by the Ministry of Rural Development under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana–National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM).

Designed exclusively for women Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and their federations, eSARAS provides over 8.62 crore women artisans with direct access to nationwide markets. From Chanderi weavers in Madhya Pradesh and marble artisans in Rajasthan to Pashmina producers in Jammu & Kashmir, the platform removes intermediaries, connecting consumers directly to local craft traditions across diverse product categories including apparel, home decor, personal care, and organic foods.

Pillars of Impact

Institutional Marketing & Branding: Beyond providing an online storefront, eSARAS equips SHGs with formal branding, standardized packaging, and integrated fulfillment center support.

Open Digital Architecture: Through ONDC and UMANG integrations, rural micro-enterprises compete on equal footing with established commercial brands without absorbing prohibitive listing fees.

Socio-Economic Inclusion: By converting traditional skills—such as pottery, handloom weaving, and artisanal food processing—into sustainable livelihoods, eSARAS strengthens financial independence among rural women while safeguarding India's cultural heritage.

eSARAS illustrates how targeted digital infrastructure can transform localized craftsmanship into a national economic driver. By combining mobile technology, institutional logistics, and strategic market access, the platform continues to advance women’s entrepreneurship and foster a self-reliant, digitally empowered rural economy.
