Empowering Communities: Northern Coalfields Limited Drives Sustainable Growth in Singrauli Through Strategic CSR
Over the past 12 years, NCL’s Corporate Social Responsibility expenditure has surged nearly fourfold, reaching ₹146 Crore in FY 2025–26 and improving the lives of nearly one million people across Singrauli, Sonbhadra, and adjacent regions.
Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL), a prominent Miniratna subsidiary of Coal India Limited under the Ministry of Coal, continues to demonstrate that energy production and social equity can go hand in hand. Over a transformative 12-year trajectory, NCL has expanded its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) footprint across Singrauli (Madhya Pradesh), Sonbhadra (Uttar Pradesh), and neighboring territories.
From an annual CSR allocation of ₹39 Crore in FY 2013–14, the company’s expenditure has scaled up to ₹146 Crore for FY 2025–26. Cumulative CSR investments over this period stand at ₹1,370 Crore, delivering direct socio-economic benefits to nearly 10 lakh (1 million) individuals.
Strategic Focus Areas and High-Impact Initiatives
Guided by the Ministry of Coal, NCL’s CSR portfolio encompasses education, advanced healthcare, disability empowerment, environmental conservation, rural electrification, and livelihood generation.
1. Education and Technical Training Infrastructure
Institute of Mining Technology: NCL is contributing ₹76 Crore toward establishing a state-of-the-art Mining Technology Institute in Singrauli. Managed by the Directorate of Technical Education, Bhopal, it will offer specialized engineering courses tailored to regional industrial requirements.
Support for Tribal Youth: Infrastructure developments at Sewa Kunj Ashram in Chapki, Sonbhadra—including an auditorium, indoor sports arena, and archery facilities—are currently benefiting 300 tribal and underprivileged students.
Skill Development & ITI Upgradation: An investment of ₹3.86 Crore in upgrading ITI Waidhan (Singrauli) and ITI Dudhi (Sonbhadra) has enabled job-oriented technical training for over 1,350 youth, women, and project-affected families (PAFs).
2. Specialized Healthcare and Medical Aid
‘Nanha-Sa-Dil-NCL’ (Pediatric Cardiac Care): Over 38,000 children have been screened for Congenital Heart Disease across Singrauli and Sonbhadra, with 240 successful, free-of-cost pediatric heart surgeries performed to date.
Project ‘Charak’: Offering financial coverage of up to ₹8.50 Crore for underprivileged patients suffering from critical conditions such as cancer, tuberculosis, HIV, cardiac ailments, and kidney transplants.
Cancer Care Equipment Support: NCL has deployed over ₹14 Crore to equip premier medical hubs, including the Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya Cancer Centre in Varanasi, directly benefiting nearly 2,800 patients.
Gastroenterology Advancement: Allocated ₹6 Crore to establish a dedicated Gastroenterology Unit at Shyam Shah Medical College, Rewa.
3. Disability Empowerment and Elderly Care
District Disability Rehabilitation Centres (DDRCs): Operations across Singrauli (MP), Sonbhadra (UP), and Surajpur (Chhattisgarh) provide annual speech therapy, physiotherapy, counseling, and free assistive devices to approximately 2,000 persons with disabilities (CwDs).
Varanasi Old Age Home: Constructed at a cost of ₹24.76 Crore, this 100-bed modern facility—inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi—provides shelter, security, and healthcare to destitute senior citizens.
4. Environmental Stewardship and Rural Upliftment
Green CSR and Watershed Management: NCL has invested ₹9.53 Crore in cleaning river catchment areas (Gopad and Mayar rivers), constructing check dams, and building percolation dams to combat soil erosion and recharge groundwater tables.
Rural Electrification: Successfully electrified 10,253 households in Chitrangi block, illuminating the lives of over 40,000 rural residents.
Women-Led Livelihoods: The 'Small Holders Poultry Project' has economically empowered 1,050 tribal families, predominantly women, with backward linkage plans underway to integrate an additional 1,500 households.
NCL’s multi-pronged CSR framework proves that corporate responsibility goes beyond basic philanthropy. By building sustainable infrastructure, funding specialized healthcare, and driving inclusive economic models, NCL continues to light up homes while fostering long-term resilience across India’s industrial heartland.
