The Nature School in Pampore is an open-air Sunday learning platform designed to connect children with the environment, foster effective communication skills, and encourage grassroots learning. Founded around 2019–20 by environmental lawyer Advocate Nadeem Qadri, the initiative operates completely free of cost, without formal classrooms, concrete structures, or a set syllabus.
Key Features & Learning Approach
Open-Air Learning Space: Rather than sitting indoors, students (aged 8–30) gather in open fields, sitting on carpets and chairs. They engage with books, paints, open-air library facilities, and discussion groups.
No Fixed Syllabus: The school invites scientists, lecturers, and domain experts to share their insights. Children follow their curiosity and seek mentorship based on their specific interests.
No Admission Process or Fees: Open to children from various schools, villages, and socio-economic backgrounds across Pampore. The aim is equal opportunity regardless of wealth.
Free Transport & Resources: The initiative provides four-wheel-drive vehicles to pick up and drop off students, along with free refreshments, computers, a laptop, and 5G Wi-Fi for research and learning.
Core Impact & Focus Areas
Practical Environmental Education:
Students learn about local ecosystems, wildlife, forests, and wetlands firsthand.
Activities include plantation drives, clean-up campaigns, birdwatching, and community interactions.
Example: Volunteer Seerat, an environmental science graduate, went from having little practical knowledge of local wetlands to becoming a skilled birdwatcher and bird guide through her involvement with the school.
Building Confidence & Communication:
Interaction across different age groups and schools helps shy or introverted children overcome public speaking hesitation and build self-confidence.
Empowering Girls & Building Trust:
Special emphasis is placed on involving girls from rural areas in outdoor events and field activities.
Volunteers coordinate closely with parents and accompany students to alleviate safety concerns and build trust within conservative or hesitant families.
Operations & Volunteer-Driven Model
Volunteers & Mentors: The initiative relies on approximately 10 active volunteers, alongside external mentors and professionals.
Funding: The program operates without regular NGO funding. Key expenses—including transport, learning materials, and refreshments—are personally funded by Advocate Nadeem Qadri, supported by volunteers donating their time and expertise.
